Slides into backup role
Chandler is poised to back up Aaron Jones, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Chandler briefly stood atop Minnesota's depth chart following the release of Alexander Mattison, but the addition of a veteran with true three-down capabilities in Jones likely returns him to a complementary role. That said, the 29-year-old Jones has battled injuries in recent years, playing just 11 games in 2023, while Chandler flashed some upside in limited opportunities last season while averaging 4.5 YPC. He remains an interesting stash for fantasy purposes, though the Vikings could also add further depth to their backfield in free agency or the draft.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely to be team's RB1 in Week 16
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Wednesday that Chandler could continue to lead Minnesota's backfield even once Alexander Mattison's ankle injury heals, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports. "Ty is absolutely a guy that is going to continue to see a feature role in our offense," O'Connell said. "What that looks like moving forward, as far as who gets the first touch of the game and all those things, we'll continue to work through based upon what we are attempting to do scheme-wise."
ANALYSIS
Chandler posted 157 scrimmage yards and a touchdown while Mattison was sidelined in Week 15 against the Bengals, which is superior production to what Mattison has mustered in any game this season. While Chandler could remain the lead back even when Mattison's healthy, that point may be moot in Week 16 against the Lions. Mattison was a non-participant in practice both Wednesday and Thursday, so he's likely trending toward a second consecutive absence, which should allow Chandler to retain a near-monopoly on touches in Minnesota's backfield.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Chandler, a 2022 fifth-round pick, is an enticing prospect with a 4.38 40 but barely saw the field last season. He had six carries on 12 snaps (no targets). That could change this year after Dalvin Cook was released in June. Alexander Mattison is the new starter, and Chandler will compete with Kene Nwangwu and Myles Gaskin for backup snaps. Perhaps that opens the door for Chandler to be the main backup to Mattison.
