FantasyDraft NHL: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our FantasyDraft NHL series.

The 12:30 p.m. game between Detroit and Chicago is not included in Sunday contests, but the 3 p.m. game featuring Calgary and Carolina is. As such, be sure to get your lineups in early. Here are some players that intrigue me from Sunday's three games.

GOALIE

Pittsburgh Penguins, PIT vs. NYR ($16,700): The Penguins and Rangers are both on the second day of back-to-backs, but Pittsburgh is at home, and its Saturday game was in the afternoon. That will give Tristan Jarry more time to rest for what likely will be his second start in as many days. Pittsburgh has won three games in a row, and the Rangers, who lost 7-2 on Saturday, are 7-8-2 on the road.

CENTER

Mikko Koivu, MIN vs. VAN ($10,500): Koivu has a three-game points streak, and in his last five contests he's tallied six points overall. He's also put 111 shots on net in 45 games, but his 5.4 shooting percentage indicates the Finn has been unlucky. The Canucks have a team3.23 GAA and allow 32.1 shots per contest as well.

Jordan Staal, CAR vs. CGY ($8,500): Staal averages 11.50 fantasy points per game, and he's sporting a five-game points streak. He's also averaged 2:43 per game on the power play, notching nine points with the extra man. The Flames have allowed 34.0 shots on net per contest on the road, and their GAA is being buoyed by the 35-year-old Mike Smith having a .922 save percentage. That would be the second-best save percentage of his career if he sustains it.

WING

Patric Hornqvist, PIT vs. NYR ($12,400): The Rangers have allowed a staggering 37.9 shots on net per game on the road, most in the NHL. They are also on the second day of a back-to-back, and both of their goalies had to play in their blowout loss Saturday. Hornqvist has tallied 132 shots on goal through 41 games, and he's never had fewer than 220 shots in a full season. He's also averaged a career-high 3:46 per game on the power play.

Brock Boeser, VAN at MIN ($12,000): Boeser averages 16.05 fantasy points per game, second most of any wing playing Sunday. His scoring hasn't slowed either, as he's tallied 10 points in his last 10 games. The Wild are on the second night of a back-to-back and allow 37.0 shots per game on zero days of rest.

Matthew Tkachuk, CGY at CAR ($11,200): In his last nine games, Tkachuck has nine points, including four on the power play. He already has nine points with the extra man in 42 games after having 13 as a rookie. The Hurricanes have a mediocre penalty kill, ranking 21st. Carolina also has a .896 team save percentage.

DEFENSE

Alexander Edler, VAN at MIN ($10,800): Edler has a three-game points streak, and in his last five he's registered a whopping 26 shots. The 31-year-old has 76 shots in 32 games, and since he has a career-low 2.6 shooting percentage he could start scoring more soon. As noted, the Wild are on the second night of a back-to-back, and likely starter Alex Stalock has a .911 save percentage in his last nine outings.

Justin Faulk, CAR vs. CGY ($9,100): Faulk started slowly this season, but he's picked up his play recently. In his last 11 outings, he has three goals, four assists and 34 shots on net. He's also averaged 3:08 per game with the extra man and has tallied seven points on the power play. The Flames are thoroughly mediocre defensively, as they rank 14th in both team GAA and shots allowed per game, and 19th on the penalty kill.
