Carter Rowney

Rowney was pushed into a larger role for the Ducks than initially expected in 2018-19, playing in 62 games while contributing 20 points and 178 hits in his first year with the team. The 30-year-old forward will likely be competing with Derek Grant for fourth-line minutes this season, which will obviously limit his fantasy upside. Even if he's able to secure a regular role with the big club in 2019-20, Rowney's lack of offensive upside will keep him off the radar in nearly all formats.

One thing the Penguins have never lacked is talent down the middle of their lineup, which caused Rowney to spend much of his time either watching from the press box or filling in on the wing -- a role that doesn't suit him well. In Anaheim, the 28-year-old figures to see more consistent minutes in his natural center position, though he will likely need to hold off Brian Gibbons to remain there. A quality two-way player, the hard-working Canadian isn't going to blow the doors off offensively, but he should provide the organization with some defensive security which likely caps his fantasy value to the 10-20 point range.

Following Nick Bonino’s move to Nashville in the offseason, Rowney could revert to his natural center position in 2017-18 thanks to GM Jim Rutherford’s failure to acquire a veteran to occupy bottom-six duties down the middle. The Alberta native appeared in just 27 regular-season contests as a rookie last year, but he earned the right to appear in 20 playoff outings -- including all six Stanley Cup Finals tilts versus Nashville. He didn't play enough to make a big splash in the fantasy realm last year, and with a third-line and penalty-killing role on tap, there’s not much to say that he'll improve dramatically this season. Still, the power winger flashed his offensive skill set for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, providing 77 points in 100 games over the last two years, so he has some long-term appeal. In the short term, he'll help out owners in fantasy formats that count hits, having averaged more than two per game last season, while adding a bit of complementary offense.
