The Lightning assigned Nieves to AHL Syracuse on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Nieves signed a one-year, two-way contract with Tampa Bay on Tuesday and was subsequently waived for the purpose of reassignment. The 26-year-old forward has accrued 76 games of NHL experience over the past four campaigns, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him join the Lightning's taxi squad at some point this season, but he'll head to the minors for now.

Nieves is on a tryout with the Lightning at the time of this writing, with no guarantee that will lead to a contract for the 2020-21 season. He had no points in four games with the Rangers last year after posting 10 points in 43 outings the year before. Nieves doesn't have much potential in the fantasy game, as he's not likely to see more than very limited fourth-line minutes if he does make Tampa's Opening Night roster. He posted 27 points in 43 games with AHL Hartford in 2019-20 -- that's solid, but unspectacular in the minor leagues. Fantasy managers can pass on Nieves without hesitation.
Nieves has just enough ability to stick in the NHL and the versatility to player center or wing, but he's not productive enough to earn serious fantasy consideration. The University of Michigan product has racked up 19 points in 72 career NHL appearances, all with the Rangers. Just like he did en route to 10 points in 43 games last season, Nieves will likely toggle between being a fourth-liner or a healthy scratch, and further growth seems unlikely from the 25-year-old.
After scoring one goal and nine points in 28 games as a rookie, the 24-year-old Nieves is likely to wind up in a bottom-six role for the young Rangers club. The 6-foot-3, 212-pounder can play either center or wing, but his 44 points in 88 career appearances for AHL Hartford suggest his offensive upside is capped. Still, Nieves should have his moments for a team that's attempting to make up for a lack of star forwards with depth.
The Rangers selected Cristoval "Boo" Nieves with their second-round pick in the 2012 draft after finishing fourth in team scoring (29 points in 40 games played) during his freshmen season with the Michigan Wolverines, just behind Jets’ breakout defenseman Jacob Trouba.Unfortunately, Nieves had a bit of a sophomore slump in 2013-14, posting 22 points (three goals) in 34 games. Keep in mind, he spent most of the season transitioning from wing to center, so it will be interesting to see how he bounces back in his junior year.
Nieves, most commonly referred to as "Boo", has a ton of excitement building around his name. It's fair to say the Rangers' second round pick of the 2012 NHL Entry draft is one of their most prized prospects. After collecting eight goals and 21 assists in 40 games as a freshmen with the Michigan Wolverines, it's no surprise the 19-year-old center was invited to Team USA's World Junior camp, much-less the Rangers prospect camp this off season. While there's still a lot of excitement ahead of Nieves he's not going to be of any help to annual re-drafters this season. Keeper league owners should commence salivation.
The Rangers' second-round pick in the 2012 entry draft has decided to play his 2012-13 season the University of Michigan. The 18-year-old most likely won't see the NHL for a few years, but he's a talented player that dynasty owners would do well to keep an eye on.
