ANALYSIS
Johns accumulated 33 points (15 goals, 18 assists) in 167 career NHL games over parts of four seasons. He suffered a concussion in the 2017-18 campaign and battled post-traumatic migraines for the better part of two years before making his return. However, he was unable to play in 2020-21, and will end his playing career at 29 years old.

Johns returned to the NHL after a nearly two-year absence due to post-traumatic headaches in 2019-20. In 17 games, he produced a respectable five points, 50 hits and 20 blocked shots. Unfortunately, he appeared in only four playoff games during the Stars' run to the Stanley Cup Finals before he was sidelined. While nothing specific was mentioned in terms of the cause of his absence, it's very possible Johns could be done with his playing career. The 28-year-old could provide solid numbers across most categories if he does play in 2020-21, and it would likely come at the expense of Andrej Sekera's spot in the lineup. At this point, however, Johns shouldn't be expected to suit up.
While he doesn't offer much offensive upside, Johns emerged as a secondary category monster last season and was one of only seven players in the NHL to record at least 150 hits and 150 blocked shots while playing in a career-high 75 games. The 6-foot-4 defenseman uses his size and reach very effectively to gum up the works for the opposition offense, and the Stars rewarded Johns for his efforts with a three-year contract extension in the offseason. With John Klingberg, Esa Lindell and Julius Honka handling the scoring duties off the blue line, Johns will be more than happy to do the dirty work instead.
Johns earned a fairly consistent role with Dallas last year. This year, there's more competition for minutes and coupled with his limited offensive potential, it's hard to see him being a big fantasy producer unless the situation on the blue line changes.
Johns was taken 60th overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He though is expected to be skating for the University of Notre Dame this season.
