Originally a 2nd round pick by Anaheim in 2001, Popovic is one of Atlanta's best defensive prospects. The team would love him to step up his game and grab one of the last few spots on the team they've signed veterans Karel Pilar and Joel Kwiatkowski as insurance. He's played in seven NHL games and has zero points to show for it. Right now, we think he'll be back for a another year of seasoning in the minors, which means no fantasy value here...at least not this season.
Popovic is only turning 24 this season so he’s still young enough to turn a corner and develop into a useful fantasy defender, although it probably won’t happen this season. He was a 2nd round pick in 2001 and he managed decent offensive totals in the AHL last season (38 points in 73 games) so there is a bit of pedigree there. He’s not one of Atlanta’s top d-men at the moment so it would take an injury or slump from somebody to get him to the NHL. Even if he was to get that opportunity he would settle in the 10-20 point range.
The Thrashers acquired Popovic from the Ducks in exchange for forward Kip Brennan. Popovic will provide the Thrashers with some depth at defense but he will not be one of the major contributors in Atlanta this year. He is still considered a prospect for Atlanta as he is only 22 years old and with some more seasoning could be a good two-way defenseman.
