This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

***BYE WEEKS - Miami & Oakland. First posted Tuesday, 9/30. Sunday Update Complete. Check our latest news page for any late-breaking news, such Vernon Davis's status for the late game..***

Here are our rankings for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: three points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards. Flex Rankings are for PPR leagues.

Typically, this article will be posted on Tuesday evenings, roughly around 8:00 pm PT. ***These are not draft rankings. They are solely for the given week of the season.***

I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule for the given week. But the first of those updates usually won't happen until Thursday. At any rate, I will post a "last updated" note at the top of the article, or an "update in progress" note if it's while I'm doing it.

By all means, if you want to discuss a rank, or want me to add a player, chime in on the comments. I try to be receptive to your feedback and try to respond to most comments, though on occasion the volume can be quite thick. Please refer to the

Quarterback

1.Drew Brees NO vs. TB
2.Aaron Rodgers GB vs. Min
3.Peyton Manning DEN vs. Ari
4.Andrew Luck IND vs. Bal
5.Tony Romo DAL vs. Hou
Note: Took his usual maitenance day Wednesday. *** Listed as probable. ***
6.Ben Roethlisberger PIT at Jax
7.Matthew Stafford DET vs. Buf
Note: Bounced back from last week's shaky outing with a strong road game without the services of a health Megatron - I'm impressed.
8.Philip Rivers SD vs. NYJ
9.Nick Foles PHI vs. StL
Note: Much shakier performance for Foles last week - the lack of OL depth is coming back to haunt him, too.
10.Eli Manning NYG vs. Atl
11.Russell Wilson SEA at Was
12.Matt Ryan ATL at NYG
Note: I'm still a little concerned about his road stats, and now he's without his starting center for the rest of the year.
13.Jay Cutler CHI at Car
14.Joe Flacco BAL at Ind
15.Colin Kaepernick SF vs. KC
16.Andy Dalton CIN at NE
17.Alex Smith KC at SF
18.Cam Newton CAR vs. Chi
19.Blake Bortles JAC vs. Pit
Note: Bortles is prone to making some mistakes, as any rookie might, but his ceiling is so much higher than Chad Henne's ceiling. Only two three-and-outs so far since taking over.
20.Brian Hoyer CLE at Ten
21.*Austin Davis STL at Phi
Note: Will be the starter for the Rams for the rest of the season.
22.Tom Brady NE vs. Cin
23.Ryan Fitzpatrick HOU at Dal
24.*Mike Glennon TB at NO
Note: I know that the Bucs invested in McCown just this offseason, but I don't see why they wouldn't play Glennon again this week, even if McCown can avoid surgery.
25.*Kirk Cousins WAS vs. Sea
Note: *** Robert Griffin could return as early as Week 8.***
26.*Drew Stanton ARZ at Den
Note: Looks as though he'll get another start this week, though Palmer might practice Friday.
27.Christian Ponder MIN at GB
28.*Geno Smith NYJ at SD
Note: Keeping his job for now, but the fact that they are even asking the question doesn't bode well.
29.*Jake Locker TEN vs. Cle
Note: (Wrist) Didn't throw Monday, looks like he'll practice Wednesday, after which point we'll have a better idea of whether he'll play this week. On track to start this week after sitting out last week. *** Listed as probable, will start. ***
30.*Kyle Orton BUF at Det
Note: Starting over Manuel this week.
31.*Teddy Bridgewater MIN at GB
Note: (Ankle) Bridgewater has sat out practice the last two days - with the short week, it doesn't look good for him this week. Game-time decision, but given that the Vikings activated Chandler Harnish for this game, it doesn't look good.
32.*Carson Palmer ARZ at Den
Note: Palmer didn't make as much progress with his nerve issue in his shoulder over the bye week, so his status for Week 5 is now in doubt. Diagnosed with an axillary nerve contusion, didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday. *** Officially out for this week. ***
33.Charlie Whitehurst TEN vs. Cle
34.*EJ Manuel BUF at Det
Note: Benched in favor of Kyle Orton. I have to imagine he'll get more chances, including later this year.
35.*Josh McCown TB at NO
Note: Might need surgery for his thumb ligament - awaiting results of Monday's tests. Hasn't yet been cleared to throw. *** Still hasn't been cleared to throw - yet somehow is listed as questionable and not 'out.' ***

Running Backs

1.DeMarco Murray DAL vs. Hou
2.Le'Veon Bell PIT at Jax
3.Marshawn Lynch SEA at Was
Note: ***Was rested from Thursday's practice but is listed as probable for Monday night's game.***
4.Matt Forte CHI at Car
5.*Jamaal Charles KC at SF
Note: (Ankle) Limited practice Wednesday, but this was likely precautionary given the previous injury and the fact that the Chiefs played Monday night. *** Listed as probable. ***
6.Rashad Jennings NYG vs. Atl
7.Zac Stacy STL at Phi
8.Giovani Bernard CIN at NE
9.Alfred Morris WAS vs. Sea
10.*Frank Gore SF vs. KC
Note: (Back) Full practice Wednesday. *** Listed as probable. ***
11.*LeSean McCoy PHI vs. StL
Note: Two weeks in a row McCoy hasn't been able to get anything going. The Eagles for their part have said that McCoy does not have an injury. I think his struggles can be attributed to the Eagles' offensive line issues - and they do get right tackle Lane Johnson back from a suspension this week. But still, I've definitely downgraded him for the near future.
12.*Reggie Bush DET vs. Buf
Note: Could be in line for a big workload if either/both Joique Bell or Theo Riddick are out this week.
13.Eddie Lacy GB vs. Min
Note: Despite the touchdown against the Bears, Lacy had another underwhelming game overall, especially for a team protecting a big lead in the second half.
14.*Andre Ellington ARZ at Den
Note: (Foot) Limited participant Wednesday. *** Listed as probable. ***
15.Chris Ivory NYJ at SD
16.Doug Martin TB at NO
17.*Ahmad Bradshaw IND vs. Bal
Note: Injured his ankle in the win over Tennessee and later returned, but then was wearing a walking boot after the game. Sat out Wednesday's practice but was a full participant Thursday. *** Listed as probable.***
18.Montee Ball DEN vs. Ari
19.*Arian Foster HOU at Dal
Note: (Hamstring) Not yet near 100 percent, but was heavily involved in the passing game against the Bills. Did not practice Wednesday and was limited Thursday. *** Limited Friday as well, but listed as probable. ***
20.Matt Asiata MIN at GB
Note: Yes, I underestimated Asiata, or at least his matchup, by an order of magnitude or even two! The three TDs will give him job security even with McKinnon running well, as will McKinnon's ankle injury.
21.Khiry Robinson NO vs. TB
22.Shane Vereen NE vs. Cin
23.Bishop Sankey TEN vs. Cle
Note: Hey, here's an idea, why not give your best playmaker in the backfield more than one carry before halftime? Just a thought. The Titans have suggested that Sankey will get added reps this week. Had 22 snaps against the Colts, 29 against the Bengals the week before.
24.Justin Forsett BAL at Ind
25.Steven Jackson ATL at NYG
26.C.J. Spiller BUF at Det
27.Jeremy Hill CIN at NE
28.Lorenzo Taliaferro BAL at Ind
29.Isaiah Crowell CLE at Ten
30.Donald Brown SD vs. NYJ
31.Stevan Ridley NE vs. Cin
32.Trent Richardson IND vs. Bal
33.Darren Sproles PHI vs. StL
34.*Toby Gerhart JAC vs. Pit
Note: Still the starter, but he lost a fumble last week and virtually shared the carries with Denard Robinson last week.
35.Fred Jackson BUF at Det
36.*Ben Tate CLE at Ten
Note: (Knee) Returned to practice Tuesday, vows to play this week - but where is he in the Browns' pecking order? This three-headed monster will be difficult to predict, though RB coach Wilbur Montgomery implied that Tate will be the starter when he's ready. On track to play (and start) Sunday. *** Listed as probable, though he personally said that he's closer to questionable. I'm more wary than I was a few days ago.***
37.Chris Johnson NYJ at SD
38.Terrance West CLE at Ten
39.*Darrin Reaves CAR vs. Chi
Note: Starter by default this week, with every other Carolina running back hurt. The team signed Chris Ogbonnaya as depth, and it's possible Fozzy Whittaker could also play this week.
40.*Pierre Thomas NO vs. TB
Note: Seems like a candidate for the Witness Protection Program after getting just two carries and two catches last week, even with Ingram out.
41.Alfred Blue HOU at Dal
42.Knile Davis KC at SF
43.LeGarrette Blount PIT at Jax
44.*Jerick McKinnon MIN at GB
Note: Had a huge game against the Falcons, but injured his ankle in the process and was limited in Monday and Tuesday's practices. Listed as probable.
45.Branden Oliver SD vs. NYJ
46.Antone Smith ATL at NYG
47.*Bobby Rainey TB at NO
Note: Back to a standard backup role for now with Doug Martin back. Only two carries against the Steelers.
48.Carlos Hyde SF vs. KC
49.Shonn Greene TEN vs. Cle
50.Roy Helu WAS vs. Sea
51.Jacquizz Rodgers ATL at NYG
52.Denard Robinson JAC vs. Pit
Note: Pretty much in a timeshare with Gerhart, but that in and of itself isn't that valuable if he's not getting any goal line carries.
53.Andre Williams NYG vs. Atl
54.*James Starks GB vs. Min
Note: Coaches have said that they want to get Starks more involved going forward.
55.Dexter McCluster TEN vs. Cle
56.Ka'Deem Carey CHI at Car
57.*Fozzy Whittaker CAR vs. Chi
Note: (Quadriceps) Could return to practice Wednesday. Looks like he'll play this week and share carries with Reaves and Ogbonnoya.
58.*Bernard Pierce BAL at Ind
Note: (Thigh) Was held out as a precaution last week, but if you're the Ravens, why would you turn the job back over to him without an injury to Forsett or Taliaferro? Full practice Wednesday, but officially behind Forsett on the depth chart. *** Listed as probable.***
59.Benny Cunningham STL at Phi
60.Robert Turbin SEA at Was
61.Joseph Randle DAL vs. Hou
62.Stepfan Taylor ARZ at Den
63.*Christine Michael SEA at Was
Note: *** Not on the injury report this week. ***
64.Lance Dunbar DAL vs. Hou
65.Devonta Freeman ATL at NYG
66.Travaris Cadet NO vs. TB
67.Ronnie Hillman DEN vs. Ari
68.Cyrus Gray KC at SF
69.Jonathan Grimes HOU at Dal
70.Silas Redd WAS vs. Sea
71.Jordan Todman JAC vs. Pit
72.*James White NE vs. Cin
Note: Was on the field for 14 snaps, but 11 of those were in garbage time.
73.*Joique Bell DET vs. Buf
Note: Suffered a concussion against the Jets. Third string back Theo Riddick left in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury. Hasn't received clearance in the league's concussion protocol, didn't practice Thursday. *** Officially out this week. ***
74.*Theo Riddick DET vs. Buf
Note: Injured his hamstring last week, otherwise might have been in line for more carries given Bell's concussion. Unable to practice Thursday. *** Officially out this week. ***
75.*DeAngelo Williams CAR vs. Chi
Note: Injured his right foot in the loss to the Ravens and will be doubtful this week.
76.*Jonathan Stewart CAR vs. Chi
Note: (Sprained knee) Will be evaluated again this week, but it doesn't look great for this week. Limited in Wednesday's practice. *** Listed as doubtful this week. ***

14.Julian Edelman NE vs. Cin
15.Kelvin Benjamin CAR vs. Chi

17.Percy Harvin SEA at Was
18.Vincent Jackson TB at NO
19.Steve Smith BAL at Ind
20.*Calvin Johnson DET vs. Buf
Note: (Ankle) Limited to 37 snaps last week, probably will be limited at practice at best again this week. Has not practiced yet this week, but ankle reportedly is doing much better this week than last week. ***Limited practice Friday, said afterward that he plans to play through the injury, though he's listed as questionable. This has the potential to linger much like Roddy White's injury did last year. ***
21.DeAndre Hopkins HOU at Dal
22.Michael Floyd ARZ at Den
23.Terrance Williams DAL vs. Hou
24.T.Y. Hilton IND vs. Bal
25.Roddy White ATL at NYG

47.*Mohamed Sanu CIN at NE
Note: Could stick in the starting lineup for another week.
48.*Markus Wheaton PIT at Jax
Note: (Groin) Limited practice Wednesday and Thursday. *** Full practice Friday, listed as probable. ***
49.Miles Austin CLE at Ten
50.Davante Adams GB vs. Min
Note: Had a touchdown against the Bears called back due to an OL holding penalty, making his day look a lot worse. Clearly the third option though this week with Boykin still hurt.
51.Jeremy Kerley NYJ at SD
52.Anquan Boldin SF vs. KC
53.*Devin Hester ATL at NYG
Note: Bigger role last week with Harry Douglas out. (Ankle) Limited practice Wednesday.
54.Jordan Matthews PHI vs. StL
55.Allen Hurns JAC vs. Pit
56.Steve Johnson SF vs. KC
57.John Brown ARZ at Den
58.*Brandon LaFell NE vs. Cin
Note: The lone WR bright spot for the Pats on Monday night - 119 yards and 10 targets. If Dobson and Thompkins continue to be scratched, LaFell is the clear beneficiary.

61.Justin Hunter TEN vs. Cle
62.Andre Roberts WAS vs. Sea
63.Malcom Floyd SD vs. NYJ
64.Louis Murphy TB at NO

Note: (Shoulder) Full practice Wednesday. *** Listed as probable. ***
73.*Markus Wheaton PIT at Jax
Note: (Groin) Limited practice Wednesday and Thursday. *** Full practice Friday, listed as probable. ***
74.Greg Jennings MIN at GB
75.Steven Jackson ATL at NYG
76.Jeremy Hill CIN at NE
77.Lorenzo Taliaferro BAL at Ind
78.Stevan Ridley NE vs. Cin
79.Trent Richardson IND vs. Bal
80.*Toby Gerhart JAC vs. Pit
Note: Still the starter, but he lost a fumble last week and virtually shared the carries with Denard Robinson last week.
81.Bishop Sankey TEN vs. Cle
Note: Hey, here's an idea, why not give your best playmaker in the backfield more than one carry before halftime? Just a thought. The Titans have suggested that Sankey will get added reps this week. Had 22 snaps against the Colts, 29 against the Bengals the week before.
82.Fred Jackson BUF at Det
83.Justin Forsett BAL at Ind
84.Isaiah Crowell CLE at Ten
85.Donald Brown SD vs. NYJ
86.Brian Quick STL at Phi
87.Cordarrelle Patterson MIN at GB
88.Marques Colston NO vs. TB
89.Kendall Wright TEN vs. Cle
90.Allen Robinson JAC vs. Pit
91.Torrey Smith BAL at Ind
Note: Good news! He scored last week! Bad news! Just three targets - unstartable right now.
92.*Delanie Walker TEN vs. Cle
Note: (Shoulder) Limited practice Thursday. *** Listed as probable.***
93.Heath Miller PIT at Jax
94.Jason Witten DAL vs. Hou
95.Dwayne Bowe KC at SF
96.*Marvin Jones CIN at NE
Note: (Foot) Expected to return to action Sunday night. Be careful about him possibly getting limited reps in his first game back, however. Tweaked an ankle in Monday's practice, sat out Thursday's practice. *** Listed as doubtful. ***
97.*Ben Tate CLE at Ten
Note: (Knee) Returned to practice Tuesday, vows to play this week - but where is he in the Browns' pecking order? This three-headed monster will be difficult to predict, though RB coach Wilbur Montgomery implied that Tate will be the starter when he's ready. On track to play (and start) Sunday. *** Listed as probable, though he personally said that he's closer to questionable. I'm more wary than I was a few days ago.***
98.Miles Austin CLE at Ten
99.Davante Adams GB vs. Min
Note: Had a touchdown against the Bears called back due to an OL holding penalty, making his day look a lot worse. Clearly the third option though this week with Boykin still hurt.
100.Chris Johnson NYJ at SD
101.*Zach Ertz PHI vs. StL
Note: How often do tight ends see their production severely curtailed when their offensive line is hurt or is otherwise awful?
102.Dwayne Allen IND vs. Bal
103.Garrett Graham HOU at Dal
104.Terrance West CLE at Ten
105.*Darrin Reaves CAR vs. Chi
Note: Starter by default this week, with every other Carolina running back hurt. The team signed Chris Ogbonnaya as depth, and it's possible Fozzy Whittaker could also play this week.
106.*Pierre Thomas NO vs. TB
Note: Seems like a candidate for the Witness Protection Program after getting just two carries and two catches last week, even with Ingram out.
107.Alfred Blue HOU at Dal
108.Knile Davis KC at SF
109.LeGarrette Blount PIT at Jax
110.Roy Helu WAS vs. Sea
111.*Jerick McKinnon MIN at GB
Note: Had a huge game against the Falcons, but injured his ankle in the process and was limited in Monday and Tuesday's practices. Listed as probable.
112.Branden Oliver SD vs. NYJ
113.Eric Ebron DET vs. Buf
114.Coby Fleener IND vs. Bal
115.*Vernon Davis SF vs. KC
Note: Left Sunday's game with back spasms in addition to his previous ankle injury. Did not practice Wednesday. *** Did not practice all week, listed as questionable.***
116.*Clay Harbor JAC vs. Pit
Note: Eight targets last week in the loss to San Diego.
117.Jeremy Kerley NYJ at SD
118.Anquan Boldin SF vs. KC
119.*Devin Hester ATL at NYG
Note: Bigger role last week with Harry Douglas out. (Ankle) Limited practice Wednesday.
120.Antone Smith ATL at NYG
121.*Bobby Rainey TB at NO
Note: Back to a standard backup role for now with Doug Martin back. Only two carries against the Steelers.
122.Carlos Hyde SF vs. KC

Note: Missed a 41-yard attempt Sunday night.
10.Josh Brown NYG vs. Atl
11.Matt Bryant ATL at NYG
12.*Brandon McManus DEN vs. Ari
Note: Might have one more week remaining before Matt Prater takes over. *** The Broncos released Prater on Friday, making McManus the full-time kicker in Denver. ***
13.Stephen Gostkowski NE vs. Cin
14.Greg Zuerlein STL at Phi
15.Chandler Catanzaro ARZ at Den
16.Randy Bullock HOU at Dal
Note: Nailed two from 50+ last week - job security no longer in question.
17.Alex Henery DET vs. Buf
18.Justin Tucker BAL at Ind
19.Nick Folk NYJ at SD
20.Robbie Gould CHI at Car
21.Billy Cundiff CLE at Ten

26.Cairo Santos KC at SF
27.Kai Forbath WAS vs. Sea

Defenses

1.San Diego Chargers vs. NYJ

4.*Denver Broncos vs. Ari
Note: Broncos will get Danny Trevathan (knee) back this week.
5.Cleveland Browns at Ten
6.San Francisco 49ers vs. KC
7.*Cincinnati Bengals at NE
Note: Vontaze Burfict (concussion) didn't practice Monday, but he's still expected back this week. Burfict did not practice Thursday, but had 'robust activity' on the side.
8.New York Giants vs. Atl
9.*Pittsburgh Steelers at Jax
Note: Ryan Shazier (knee) will still be out this week. The Steelers really looked like they missed Ike Taylor in the second half comeback by the Bucs last week.
10.*Indianapolis Colts vs. Bal
Note: LaRon Landry has been suspended for four games due to violating the NFL's performance-enhancing substance policy. Jerrell Freeman (hamstring) is trying to get back this week, was limited Thursday.
11.Green Bay Packers vs. Min
12.Houston Texans at Dal
Note: J.J. Watt - good at football. Watt has missed practices Wednesday and Thursday with a thigh injury.
13.New England Patriots vs. Cin
14.Buffalo Bills at Det
15.Kansas City Chiefs at SF
16.New Orleans Saints vs. TB
17.*Baltimore Ravens at Ind
Note: Might finally get Ladarius Webb back this week.
18.Philadelphia Eagles vs. StL
19.Carolina Panthers vs. Chi
20.New York Jets at SD
21.*Chicago Bears at Car
Note: Jared Allen was deactivated last week due to pneumonia. The Bears are a tough rank this week - I really want to fade Carolina's offense, but I also have no faith in the Bears' defense. TBD.
22.Arizona Cardinals at Den
23.Tennessee Titans vs. Cle
24.Washington Redskins vs. Sea
25.*Atlanta Falcons at NYG
Note: Lost S William Moore to a serious shoulder injury.

27.*Tampa Bay Buccaneers at NO
Note: Dashon Goldon left in the first quarter with an ankle injury and is uncertain for this week.
28.*Minnesota Vikings at GB
Note: Chad Greenway (hand/ribs) questionable at best for Thursday.
29.Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Pit
30.St. Louis Rams at Phi
