Thompson, who played under David Cutcliffe at Duke, made an impact on the Broncos as an undrafted rookie in 2014 with 297 total yards and three touchdowns, earning the praise of fellow Cutcliffe disciple Peyton Manning. Thompson has touched the ball just 32 times in the two seasons since while alternating between halfback and fullback under head coach Gary Kubiak. The arrival of Vance Joseph and offensive coordinator Mike McCoy means that the Broncos will run a similar offense to the one Thompson flashed promise in in 2014. The problem is that Devontae Booker, Jamaal Charles, De’Angelo Henderson and others have been added in the interim and there might not be enough slots behind C.J. Anderson to fit Thompson.
Thompson might have quietly had the Broncos' harshest offseason. He entered March with the potential to emerge as Denver's elder statesman, only to see the team resign both C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman. Then he watched as the team invested a fourth round pick on Devontae Booker. Thompson did not transition well to head coach Gary Kubiak's one-cut scheme, as his touches decreased from 58 in 2014 to 24 in 2015. His yards per touch similarly declined, 5.1 to 4.1. Kubiak's interest in utilizing a fullback should benefit the broad-shouldered Thompson in theory, but he'll have to beat out sixth-round pick Andy Janovich, who is more familiar with the position.
Thompson began last season fourth on the Broncos’ depth chart at running back but eventually took over the backup role when C.J. Anderson displaced Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman, who both missed significant time with injuries, as the starter. Thompson is the biggest of the four backs, so it’s possible that he could vulture a few goal-line looks (two of his three touchdowns came from inside the 2-yard line), if any of the others struggle. He enters this season fourth again, but Ball struggled mightily before suffering his groin injury last season, and Hillman has battled ailments in all three seasons of his career, so Thompson may not be too far away from being a bigger contributor.
Thompson will get a shot at making the roster out of training camp, but he's far enough down the depth chart that it would take a number of injuries for him to be in line to make a meaningful fantasy impact this season.
