Transitioning to offensive line
OTBaltimore Ravens
Knee - MCL
February 21, 2018
Gillmore (knee), who has played tight end since entering the NFL in 2014, is in the process of transitioning to the offensive line, Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Gillmore, who has been limited to just 17 appearances over his past three seasons with the Ravens, was sidelined all of last season while recovering from surgery to address an MCL injury, which he sustained early in training camp. Listed at 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds last season, the 26-year-old has reportedly added considerable bulk to help with the transition. In addition, Gillmore has spent his offseason training with former NFL lineman LeCharles Bentley to improve his blocking technique. Given his lack of prior experience at guard or tackle -- his most likely new positions -- Gillmore may have to settle for a short-term deal when he hits free agency this summer and could face an uphill battle to earn a 53-man roster spot for any team that he might join.

The Ravens' crowded group at tight end makes Gillmore a difficult player to project. He's shown the ability to be a viable option in the past, highlighted by his 33-catch, four-touchdown campaign in 2015 before his season was cut short. Unfortunately, having his season cut short has been the one constant out of Gillmore since he was drafted in 2014. Back, shoulder, and various leg injuries have limited him to a total of 17 games over the past two seasons, and he's now expected to miss all of 2017 after tearing his MCL during training camp. Ben Watson, Maxx Williams and Nick Boyle are left to compete for snaps at tight end.
One of Baltimore's primary targets for much of the 2015 season, Gillmore was limited to 10 appearances by back and shoulder injuries, with the latter ultimately requiring offseason surgery. He proved competent as both a receiver and blocker, yet the Ravens still added Ben Watson in free agency, after using a 2015 second-round selection on Maxx Williams. What's more, Dennis Pitta hopes to play for the first time since September of 2014, giving the Ravens quite a crowd at tight end. With Watson expected to start, Gillmore may have a hard time getting on the field – and that's if he's even healthy by Week 1.
Gillmore, a 2014 third-round draft pick, spent most of his rookie season as the Ravens' No. 2 tight end behind Owen Daniels, after Dennis Pitta suffered a career-threatening hip injury. While he may open 2015 as the team's starter, Gillmore is unlikely to put up prolific receiving numbers. Rather, rookie second-rounder Maxx Williams is a better bet to emerge as one of Joe Flacco's favorite targets.
The Ravens selected Gilmore toward the end of the third round in the 2014 draft, but the team already has Dennis Pitta and Owen Daniels in place. While Gilmore could come into some kind of role if one of those two gets injured, he will likely be an observer for much of his rookie season. Given that he's mostly known for his blocking, Gilmore could poach a touchdown or two as the third tight end in goal-line formations.
