August 15, 2019
Jones is leaving the NFL and will join the XFL, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones becomes the first player to officially join the XFL, which will kick off its relaunch in February 2020. The 2013 fourth-round pick was a free agent and was likely looking at nothing more than a backup role at best had he landed on an NFL roster.

Despite serving as Ben Roethlisberger's primary backup the past two seasons, the Steelers drafted two quarterbacks over that span, suggesting they do not view Jones as a long-term solution. Also working against him is the $1.9 million the team can save with his release. Should Jones land with another team in a starting role, he has some upside, with a respectable career completion rate of 63.9 percent, a 7.75 yard average, and a passer rating of 86.2 in 18 games.
Jones has proven to be a decent backup for Pittsburgh the past few years, starting two games in place of Ben Roethlisberger in both 2015 and 2016. Assuming he is not supplanted by draftee Joshua Dobbs, Jones can be a useful short-term fantasy option in the event that Roethlisberger is forced to miss any games due to injury in 2017.
Jones, who has one year remaining on his contract, put up pedestrian numbers when forced in to action last season. As a result, he will once again compete for the back-up role this season with Bruce Gradkowski, who was re-signed after missing the entire 2015 campaign due to injury. Even with all the health concerns surrounding Ben Roethlisberger, neither Jones nor Gradkowski merit fantasy consideration on draft day.
Jones will compete with Bruce Gradkowski for the opportunity to back-up Ben Roethlisberger, with the loser most likely heading to the practice squad.
Jones will likely be behind Bruce Gradkowski for playing time in the event starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger gets hurt.
Jones has some value in dynasty leagues, as the Steelers view him as a possible future replacement to Ben Roethlisberger. However, he is highly unlikely to see the field during his rookie season, barring injuries.
