Working out for Jets

The Jets are hosting Foster (knee) for a tryout Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Foster hasn't appeared in NFL action since the 2018 season, when he suited up for six games with the 49ers. He missed the last two seasons due to a torn ACL and LCL, but Foster will now get a chance to prove his health by working out for New York. The Jets are in need of depth and upside in the linebacker corps, so the team could take a chance on the 2017 first-round pick.

Foster is set to work out with the Dolphins on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old linebacker has played only 16 NFL games after being drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2017 Draft, with off-field incidents and a serious knee injury seeming to have cut his career short, but Foster has since proven his health by playing in the USFL. Miami is in the market for help at linebacker after Jerome Baker suffered a knee injury of his own Sunday.

Selected 31st overall by the 49ers in the 2017 draft, Foster has seen the first three years of his career defined by a mixture of off-field issues and injuries. He landed in Washington after the Niners released him late in the 2018 campaign, and while he appeared set for a starting job last season, Foster suffered a torn ACL during spring practices. He'll now need to prove himself to a new coaching staff, but there is some IDP potential if he can secure a three-down role.
Foster is a total lottery ticket given his concerning off-field history, but Washington presumably wouldn't buy the ticket unless they're looking to cash it in with a full-time workload. Foster was universally regarded as a first-round talent in the 2017 draft before his issues ran him out of San Francisco, and Washington has room for him after Zach Brown's exit. Any linebacker who earns a three-down role is noteworthy in IDP leagues, and if Foster realizes his theoretical potential in such a role he could provide a breakout impact in 2019.
Foster erased the memory of his impressive rookie campaign when a litany of legal issues stemming from his behavior off the field came to light this offseason. Just when it looked like the linebacker's career with San Francisco would come to screeching halt, his accuser made a statement saying that she had fabricated domestic assault allegations, which led to those charges being dropped by the Santa Clara court system. That development may have saved his career, and Foster is now expected to break camp with the 49ers after all. He isn't completely out of hot water, as the league did issue a two-game suspension for violations of the policies on personal conduct and substances of abuse. The short ban hurts his stock in IDP formats, but it's tough to argue against Foster's talent after he made 72 tackles in 10 games while quickly becoming the leader of a young 49ers defense.
Foster was a consensus top-10 prospect in the 2017 draft, but fell toward the end of the first round due to shoulder injury concerns. The 49ers traded up from the second round to get him, and as a result a starting role should be within reach. Foster is a rangy player who figures to play outside in San Francisco's 4-3, and while a true three-down role isn't guaranteed, a season-ending injury to Malcolm Smith has opened a path to a regular role right out of the gates, which puts the rookie on the map in IDP leagues.
