ANALYSIS
Backman signed a future contract with the Lions back in January. He spent last season on Detroit's practice squad after being cut by the Packers during the preseason. He was near the bottom of the Lions' tight end depth chart and it was unlikely that he'd be able to make final roster for Week 1. He'll look to catch on with another team in 2017.

2015 Team Preview: Green Bay Packers

With MVP Aaron Rodgers under center, the Packers' offense was as dynamic as ever in 2014, but how much better can they possibly be in 2015?
Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
Known for his daunting receiving prowess, Backman failed to record a single catch across seven games in 2015. His lack of production wasn't the problem for him, though; Backman needs to refine the technical aspects of his blocking so he can get on the field more. Working in his favor is the signing of tight ends coach Brian Angelichio this offseason. Angelichio somehow managed to animate the 30-year-old corpse of Gary Barnidge last season to the tune of 79 receptions, 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns. Barnidge had previously failed to top two touchdowns or 250 receiving yards in any season across his entire career. Working against Backman, however, is the fact that Green Bay brought in Jared Cook via free agency to a position group already sporting Richard Rodgers and Justin Perillo, among others. For the time being, Backman will likely spend the majority of 2016 behind both Rodgers and Cook and competing with Perillo for the scraps.
The athletic Backman was selected by the Packers in the sixth round of this year's draft. He will likely need to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, but the tight end position is not as deep as it used to be in Green Bay, leaving his path to a spot easier. If Backman makes the cut, he would be at best the Packers' third-string tight end and would likely see most of his action on special teams.
