Nebraska's all-time leading receiver has had a tough time making a similar impact at the NFL level, spending his rookie season on IR before being waived by the Buccaneers with an injury settlement last season. Bell does have excellent measurables to fall back on, including a 4.42 40-yard dash at 6-1, and elite vertical and broad jump numbers. However, Baltimore's top trio of Mike Wallace, Jeremy Maclin, and Breshad Perriman is set in stone, so Bell will be battling with the likes of Chris Moore, Michael Campanaro, and Chris Matthews for a depth spot during training camp.
The "redshirt rookie," as he's been termed by head coach Dirk Koetter, will finally have an opportunity to show what he can do on the field after missing his entire rookie campaign due to a hamstring injury. Bell was diligent enough to stay involved despite his inactivity, attending all team meetings and traveling with the club on road games. The University of Nebraska product demonstrated a diverse skill set during his three collegiate campaigns, gaining 2,798 yards and 22 touchdowns from scrimmage, while also generating another 1,277 yards on 51 kick returns, along with one end-zone visit. Tellingly, he's one of several receivers competing for a roster spot who have also been auditioning for the Bucs' open kick-return position in OTAs. The 24-year-old's college pedigree, youth, past success on special teams, and impressive 4.38 speed certainly could give him a leg up on the competition in training camp.
Bell lacks the ideal measurables of a pro receiver and is perhaps a bit older than traditional prospects, but the deficiencies that caused him to slide to the Buccaneers in the fifth round do not nullify his collegiate achievements. The son of former Broncos' running back Ken Bell set records for receptions and receiving yards at the University of Nebraska with 181 and 2,689, respectively. His athleticism and speed – he recorded a 4.42 40 and a 41.5-inch vertical leap – should make him useful on special teams and a candidate for some work in the slot down the road, but he will spend the 2015 season on IR.
