Tarik Black

After going undrafted in 2014, Black caught on with Houston, playing 25 games before being waived in order to accommodate the signing of Josh Smith. He was claimed off waivers by the Lakers at the end of December, and given the lack of quality big men, he was able to put up some decent numbers. Overall, in his 63 games, of which 39 were starts, Black averaged 6.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.3 steals, and 0.4 blocks in 19 minutes. He shot 58 percent from the field but just 55 percent from free-throw line, falling into that inauspicious group who shoots better from the field than from the stripe. A big man who can't shoot or block shots, which is what Black essentially is, has limited appeal in the NBA, but his aggressive rebounding, 7.2 per game in the season's last month, was something that allowed him to have some use in fantasy leagues for certain stretches of the season. With Roy Hibbert now in town, Black will be battling Robert Sacre for the backup minutes at center, and it appears unlikely he'd be able to beat out Hibbert to become a starter, despite Hibbert's much-publicized issues the past couple of seasons.
