Farmar was waived Monday by the Kings on Monday, James Ham of CSN Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Farmar was initially waived by the Kings at the end of the preseason, only to be re-signed a week later as a depth option at point guard as a roster exception after Darren Collison had served the first five games of an eight-game suspension. With Collison having now served the last three games of the banishment and ready to play Tuesday against the Pelicans, Farmar will be let go once again in order to keep the roster at 15 men. Farmar will look to catch on with another team over the next few weeks before perhaps seeking a contract overseas.

After a stint in Turkey, Farmar returned to the NBA last season with the Los Angeles Lakers. He signed with the Clippers this offseason to replace Darren Collison as the team's primary backup point guard. Farmar should see whatever minutes Chris Paul doesn't play at the point, but those minutes could be sporadic, and Farmar's value is tepid at best considering that he has dealt with injuries routinely during his career. If Paul were to go down with an injury, Farmar could become a significant player in fantasy this season. However, in most leagues, he should be seen as a only a handcuff and someone to have on your watchlists.
Farmar, another Laker plagued by injury, was able to play in the Lakers' second preseason game in China. Farmar was in action for 23 minutes and had nine points (to go along with four turnovers). Although listed behind Steve Nash and Steve Blake on the depth chart, Farmar may still have some slight value in deeper leagues. As the preseason comes to a close, Nash's old age appears to be affecting him. Steve Blake's shooting percentage has also been incredibly poor during the preseason, which leaves the door open for Farmar to gain an edge and possible minutes once the season gets underway.
Averaged career highs in points (9.6) and assists (5.0) last season, as Devin Harris' and Deron Williams' fragility allowed Farmar to shine in spurts. He remains one of the top backup PGs in the league but won't help much in fantasy unless given a starting gig, and owners can't bank on the Nets running consistent three-guard sets.
After four seasons and two championship rings as Derek Fisher’s caddy in Los Angeles, Farmar brings his playoff-tested resume to the opposite end of the spectrum in NJ. He’ll haul in roughly one three-pointer and one steal per game should he see around 20 minutes. He’s one to keep an eye on considering Devin Harris’ injury history.
Best known for his shooting touch, there is reason for concern after Farmar's field-goal, three-point and free-throw percentages all took a hit in his third season with the Lakers. He should still see increased playing time while working to become the team's starting point guard in the years to come. If he can regain his stroke and show the ability to consistently find the right guy in the triangle, there may be reason to add him late in some fantasy leagues.
Farmar is certainly in the Lakers’ plans, but for now he’ll be sharing the point with Derek Fisher. We’ll probably see the balance of minutes shift between the two, with Fisher getting less playing time. But in the end, it probably means nothing more than a few more shots (and points) for Farmar. The Lakers run a lot of offense from the wing through Kobe Bryant, Luke Walton or Lamar Odom, so the Lakers’ point guard spot does not produce a lot of assists. The good news is that Farmar improved his outside shooting, which is something the Lakers need to keep defenders off Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol down low.
The Lakers would like to hand the point guard keys to Farmar this season, especially with the departure of last year’s starter, Smush Parker. Farmar’s numbers last year were not terribly impressive (4.4 points, 1.9 assists), but that relatively poor showing last year can be chalked up to Lakers Coach Phil Jackson’s aversion to rookies, especially late in the season. He may be an optimal late-round speculative fantasy pickup.
Farmar doesn’t have the game of a Chris Paul or Raymond Felton; he won’t step in during his rookie year and post excellent numbers on the strength of his offensive game or court vision. But he could be one of the first rookies to win a regular spot in a rotation; a big guard who can play strong perimeter defense and won’t take shots away from Kobe Bryant or Lamar Odom, Farmar is a great fit for the triangle offense. He probably won’t score a ton, but his potential in other categories might merit a late-round look.
