Yahoo DFS Baseball: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

STARTING PITCHER

Lance McCullers Jr, HOU at CWS ($47): Here's a prime example of why you don't want to put too much stock in this year's numbers. McCullers has a 5.57 ERA, but his FIP is a much more respectable 3.39. He's also still striking out guys left and right, and his career K/9 rate is 10.42. The White Sox ranked 23rd in runs scored last year, and they are down in the bottom 10 to start this season.

Junior Guerra, MIL vs. MIA ($36): Guerra's first two starts have gone great, and he's pitched much better at home since joining the Brewers. Miami is down near the bottom of the runs scored table, but that's with playing more games than a lot of teams. That's not surprising, given the Marlins' fire sale this offseason. Guerra may be able to mow them down.

CATCHER

Buster Posey, SFG at LAA ($15): Posey is long established as one of the best hitting catchers in the major, and last season he has a .320/.400/.462 slash line. Despite this, there are several catchers than will cost you more money Sunday. A starter for the Angels hasn't been officially declared, but Jaime Barria is currently projected to take the mound. If so, the 21-year-old pitched well in his first start, but he still only has five innings of Major League Baseball to his name.

FIRST BASE

Cody Bellinger, LAD vs. WAS ($18): Bellinger crushed 39 homers last season, and though he's hit lefties and righties pretty evenly, his slugging percentage against right-handers is significantly higher. Last season, Jeremy Hellickson had a 5.43 ERA and 5.69 FIP and allowed 1.92 home runs per nine innings. Over the last three years his HR/9 rate average was 1.46. Basically, Hellickson give up homers, and Bellinger hits them. You do the math.

SECOND BASE

Eduardo Nunez, BOS at OAK ($18): Nunez has a slash line of .296/.330/.433 over the last three years. Also, over the last two seasons he notched 64 stolen bases, so he can add fantasy value with his legs. Oakland starter Daniel Mengden has a career ERA of 5.12 and a career FIP of 4.10, so there's not much to be wary about here.

THIRD BASE

Mike Moustakas, KAN at DET ($19): Moustakas is one of those hitter that suddenly found their power last season when he hit 38 dingers. He's kept it up to start this season, as he already has five homers. Francisco Liriano has a 2.55 ERA, but a 4.45 FIP. His .218 BABIP is bound to regress. Over the last three seasons he has a 4.35 ERA, but that includes time as a relief pitcher.

SHORT STOP

Eduardo Escobar, MIN at TAM ($16): Escobar is off to a good start to the season with a .277/.321/.468 slash line. This comes after he hit .254 last year with 21 homers and 73 RBI. Yonny Chirinos will be starting for the Rays. He only has four starts to his name, and while three of them went well in his last start he gave up six runs in 5.7 innings.

OUTFIELD

Giancarlo Stanton, NYY vs. TOR ($23) The complaints about Stanton's slow start are noted, but he still is coming off a year where he hit 59 homers. He's never had trouble hitting for power. His only issue has been staying healthy. He's healthy now, and Yankees Stadium remains a good place to hit homers. Jaime Garcia has a 3.86 ERA this season, but he has a 5.59 FIP. That's partially because he's allowed four home runs in 16.3 innings. The last two years he's had ERAs and FIPs over four as well.

Mitch Haniger, SEA at TEX ($21):Martin Perez has a 4.59 career ERA, which isn't good. This year, he has a 13.14 ERA, which is really bad. It's a small sample size, but the 4.82 ERA in 32 starts last season isn't.

Kyle Schwarber, CHC at COL ($20): Schwarber struggled last year, but he has a .283/.406/.566 slash line to start this season. Plus, his issue has been hitting lefties, and Colorado's German Marquez is a right-handed starter. This game is also at Coors Field, which is always a bonus for hitters.
