2024 Fantasy Outlook
Cooper appeared in a career-high 123 games last season between Miami and San Diego. He spent time on the injured list with an ear infection but was able to stay mostly healthy in 2023 -- something he has struggled with throughout his career. For the season, he hit .324/.375/.529 against left-handed pitching compared to just .228/.281/.384 against righties. His splits are not as pronounced for his career, but at 33 years old, Cooper may be best suited for short-side platoon duty between first base and designated hitter. A surprise All-Star with the Marlins in 2022, Cooper saw his strikeout rate jump to 28.9 percent last season while his walk rate dipped for the second straight year. Now in camp with the Cubs as a non-roster invitee to spring training, Cooper will look to secure a role with a strong showing in the Cactus League. He has enough in his bat to be passable in fantasy, but only when he's seeing regular playing time. Read Past Outlooks
Back in lineup as DH
Cooper (wrist) will serve as the Red Sox's designated hitter and No. 6 batter in Thursday's game against the Giants, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Cooper didn't play in Wednesday's 6-2 win while tending to a bruised right wrist, but he'll be back in action for the series finale. Given that he's serving as the Red Sox's DH rather than manning first base, it's possible that the bruised wrist is still presenting some complications with his throwing. With Masataka Yoshida (thumb) going on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, the Red Sox can give Cooper as much time as he needs at DH to heal up from the wrist issue before he's reintegrated at first base.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Target for Boston?
Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican believes the Red Sox will attempt to acquire Cooper after he was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Boston reportedly showed some interest in Cooper during the offseason before he ultimately signed with Chicago on a minor-league deal, and he'd be a good fit for the Red Sox while Triston Casas is out indefinitely with a fractured rib. Cooper had a solid start to the campaign for the Cubs with a .270/.341/.432 slash line in 41 plate appearances, so there could be multiple teams interested in acquiring him. Should the 33-year-old land in Boston, he'd likely see a significant chunk of playing time given their current replacement at first base, Bobby Dalbec, has a .188 OPS in 14 games.

Cooper received a career-high 469 plate appearances last season, and the results were more or less what you'd expect: an above-average overall performance at the plate, but not one to write home about. Cooper hit .261/.337/.415 and managed a modest nine homers, though accounting for the league-wide drop in offense as well as the tough hitting environment in Miami gives him a respectable 115 wRC+. His underlying numbers also represented more of the same. His 25.4 K% was above-average but not particularly worrisome, especially as he hit the ball hard (10.7% barrel rate) when he did make contact. It all adds up to a perfectly capable hitter, but not one who's going to excite fantasy players. While playing time should be there now that Jesus Aguilar is gone, it's unlikely another level is coming in Cooper's age-32 season. He also has durability concerns, lowering the floor for a player who's otherwise far more interesting for his floor than his ceiling.
