November 23, 2016
Hunter was suspended for 50 games after testing positive for amphetamine, the Atlanta Journal Constitution's David O'Brien reports.
ANALYSIS
He is a free agent, and at 28 years old and with this suspension hanging over him, it is unlikely he receives much interest on the open market.

Hunter was claimed off waivers by Oakland in October and will likely remain a part of the A's Triple-A affiliate at Sacramento in 2012. His biggest asset is that he doesn't strike out (an average strikeout rate of 7.5 percent over the last four seasons), but he doesn't draw many walks, he doesn't hit for power, has below-average speed and fails to make good consistent contact at the plate. Without the power, he would need to hit for a high average to even be considered for a promotion and that doesn't seem to be happening for him either.
Hunter can hit for average, but has yet to replicate the power he showed at High-A Lake Elsinore in 2008. In 2010, he split time between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Portland, where he hit a combined .287 with seven homers and 14 stolen bases. He doesn't strike out a ton, but he doesn't take many walks either. He'll likely spend 2011 back at Portland as he continues to develop (he'll be 23 years old this season) and waits for a callup. Hopefully he can rediscover his power stroke there.
Even though he won't turn 21 until March, 2008 was a bounceback year of sorts for Hunter, who had a disappointing 2007 campaign after being named the MVP of the 2006 Arizona Rookie League. Not only did he display more power last season at High-A Lake Elsinore, he improved his contact skills while maintaining good plate discipline. He also is learning to utilize his speed to a greater advantage, significantly improving his stolen base success rate. Hunter is still a couple of years away from the majors, but he appears to be back on track and should be asked to showcase his talents more at Double-A San Antonio this season.
Hunter is a rising star within the Padres' organization. In 52 games for rookie-level Peoria last year, Hunter hit .371/.467/.484 with one homer and 44 RBI. He recorded 13 doubles, four triples and stole 17 bases en route to the Arizona Rookie League's Most Valuable Player Award. Hunter projects as a speedy outfielder who hits for average but not much power. He could be the Padres' center fielder of the future, but will likely spend all of 2007 in the minors.
