Matt Whatley

Whatley is widely considered one of the top receivers in the 2017 draft class, and for good reason. The 21-year-old has been the starting catcher for Oral Roberts during his entire collegiate career thanks to a strong arm and above-average blocking skills. He also adds athleticism and good baserunning skills to his profile, albeit with below-average speed. The biggest knock on Whatley is his bat, especially after his struggles during his junior season and in the Cape Cod League over the summer. He has some natural power and draws plenty of walks, but he can get into extended slumps when he tries to pull the ball excessively and do too much at the plate.
