He does not have super loud tools, but few 18-year-olds have a better feel at the plate than Rosario. His .404 OBP was the eighth-best mark in the AZL and his 0.92 BB/K ranked sixth. While Rosario was one of the 10 youngest position players in the league, the players ahead of him in those two categories were typically at least three years his senior. He also led the league by a wide margin by hitting the ball the other way at a 54.2 percent clip. That skill is a big mark in his favor, but he could actually benefit from pulling the ball a bit more, particularly in the air. He has the bat speed and athleticism to develop into a 15-to-20 homer hitter, but that is unlikely if he continues to dump more than half of his hits into left field. Despite have a sleek, 6-foot-1 frame that screams speedy center fielder, he may only chip in 10-to-15 steals a year in the majors, though he projects to stick up the middle defensively.
When Rosario signed with the Padres for $1.85 million on July 2, he was thought to be behind the developmental curve relative to his contemporaries. However, reports from instructs suggest he is much more advanced than we were led to believe. While he was originally thought to be destined for a corner spot, it now sounds like he could stick in center field, where his "hit over power" profile will play much better. That label is more of a testament to his potentially plus hit tool than a slight on his power projection, as he has the raw physical tools to hit 20 homers. How his body matures in the coming years will dictate what kind of offensive player he becomes. If he remains somewhat lean and sticks in center, he could be a 20-homer, 20-steal threat. If he outgrows the position and moves to a corner, then he will also likely overshoot that 20-homer projection while being less of a threat on the bases. The hit tool makes either package awfully appealing. Just remember he is roughly five years away from the majors.
