OFChicago White Sox  AAA
March 14, 2022
Basabe signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Monday that includes an invite to major-league spring training.
ANALYSIS
Basabe missed nearly four months last season due to a left wrist sprain, but he spent most of his time at Double-A Richmond when healthy, where he hit .206 with two homers, 12 runs, 10 RBI and five stolen bases in 22 games. While the 25-year-old will likely have a chance to spend time at Triple-A Charlotte in 2022, he shouldn't be a strong contender for a major-league roster spot to begin the year.

The clear third piece in the deal that sent Chris Sale to Boston, Basabe's prospect stock took a hit in his first year with the White Sox and his first full season at High-A. He actually improved his walk rate (from 8.9 percent to 11.3 percent) and lowered his strikeout rate (from 25.7 percent to 23.9 percent), but his power really fell off against more advanced pitching (.189 ISO at Low-A versus a .099 ISO at High-A). Basabe may have been a little unlucky (.292 BABIP), but he was also less successful on the bases (73.9 percent success rate, compared to an 83.3 percent rate at Low-A). The good news is he is still tooled up and won't turn 22 until August. He was always a high-risk/high-reward prospect, as his hit tool has a long way to go to even be 50-grade. If he can start using the opposite field more (54 percent pull rate last year) and his luck normalizes, there's some bounce-back potential, so he is worth holding in deeper dynasty leagues.
Basabe changed colors in the offseason, going from the Red Sox to the White Sox in the Chris Sale deal. As a 19-year-old in the Low-A South Atlantic League, he held his own in his first year at a full-season affiliate. After a terrible start, the switch-hitting prospect hit .264/.328/.452 with 12 homers and 25 stolen bases for Greenville against competition at least two years older on average. He's raw, only taking up the sport within a couple of years prior to signing, but the White Sox are getting a plus defender in center field with beguiling upside. A 6-foot, 160-pounder, he possesses plus speed and good instincts on the basepaths. He has surprising power, grading out as average-to-plus, and his ability to square up the ball to all fields. Where Basabe's game falls down is in his contact rate and overall hit tool. He's struck out 27.5 percent of the time the last two seasons. The uncertainty with the bat opens up a wide spectrum of future outcomes.
Basabe, 18, signed as an international free agent in 2012, and got his first action above rookie ball in 2015, slashing .243/.340/.401 in 256 plate appearances for the short-season Lowell in the New York-Penn League. He's a switch-hitting, athletic center fielder with projectable tools, but he is still quite raw. An aggressive approach leads to a lot of swing-and-miss, but he complements that with a good walk rate and he should improve his pitch recognition as he gains more experience. At 6-foot and 170 pounds, Basabe still has some filling out to do, which will lead to more power, which is intriguing considering he was already able to hit seven homers for the Spinners. He also boasts plus speed, having swiped a team-leading 15 bags last season. Defensively, he's got good range and showed off his above-average arm, throwing out eight baserunners from the outfield. There is a lot of risk and lead time involved with owning Basabe in dynasty leagues, but it is a worthwhile bet on tools in leagues where more than 200 prospects are rostered.
