Leonel Campos

The right-hander's second go at the Triple-A level came with far better results, as Campos posted a 2.90 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 38 appearances out of the bullpen after struggling to an 11.70 mark in 2014. He improved upon his biggest weakness, trimming his walk rate to 3.8 BB/9, while fanning batters at an excellent 34.2 percent clip. Although he could still stand to reduce the free passes, most teams will live with that walk rate from a reliever who misses that many bats. Despite the strong season with El Paso, Campos was entrusted with just one inning at the major-league level, with the Padres opting against including him on the expanded September roster. There may still be some untapped potential here, and the back end of the bullpen is unsettled with Craig Kimbrel traded, but the team's reluctance to use him in the majors suggests he may not even be a lock to break camp with the big club.

Campos has developed a reputation for having untapped potential. He's carried a double-digit K/9 mark at every stop of his professional career -- including a late-season promotion to San Diego -- but he's never been able to consistently command his pitches. Working with plenty of velocity on his fastball (average 94.3 mph) and a good slider, Campos also mixes in the occasional changeup. The Padres tried him as a starter at Double-A San Antonio, but he made a total of 34 relief appearances for the year and did not make a start after being promoted. His largest sample size came at San Antonio in 2014, where he was prone to hard contact (.352 BABIP) and was also the victim for a very low LOB% (63.0%). Not surprisingly, his FIP (3.27) was significantly lower than his ERA (5.60). Given the struggles with control, Campos' role with the Padres is almost certainly going to be in the bullpen. If he can cut back on the free passes, he has the raw ability to develop into a late-inning option down the road.
