November 2, 2018
Cruz (groin) elected to become a free agent Friday.
ANALYSIS
Rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Buffalo, Cruz elected to hit the open market after passing through waivers untouched. The veteran right-hander returned to the majors for the first time since 2013 last season, though he made just two appearances before suffering a season-ending groin injury. He figures to serve as organizational bullpen depth wherever he lands this offseason.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2014
2013
Cruz was expected to play a key role in the Astros' bullpen last season, but the 27-year-old ended up spending most of his time at Triple-A. Of the time he did spend in Houston (21.1 innings), Cruz was very hittable (25 hits allowed) and had trouble finding the strike zone. He walked more batters (11) than he struck out (10), but still kept his ERA (3.38) down thanks to a high 82.4% strand rate. That percentage is not likely to be sustainable this season as Cruz continues to allow baserunners at a high clip, but he offers an intriguing power arm for the rebuilding Astros if he ever finds a way to shake off the aforementioned command woes.
The Astros selected Cruz from the Mets with the first pick in the 2011 Rule 5 Draft. He got into 52 games for Houston, showing decent strikeout potential but serving up far too many home runs (1.3 HR/9). Cruz was able to control the walks early in the year, allowing just one walk against six strikeouts through his first five appearances before the wheels came off: Cruz walked 28 in the next 48.2 innings, good for a 5.2 BB/9. With the burden of having to have Cruz on the roster all season long now lifted, the need for Cruz to perform has become paramount. Any sign of last year's problems during the spring will force him to open the season at Triple-A.
