Edgin missed the first month of the season as he rehabbed from Tommy John surgery, and though he took some time to regain his footing in the minors, he eventually worked his way back to the majors by the end of the year. The lefty struggled with his command in both the minors and majors, walking more than five batters per nine innings at both levels, and he saw his fastball velocity drop nearly two full mph from where it was prior to the surgery. The southpaw was mostly effective against lefties, but he struggled mightily against right-handed batters, allowing them to hit .300 with an OPS of .850 in a limited sample. It's not a guarantee he'll crack the Opening Day roster, but even if he does, Edgin will likely be limited to a lower-leverage role and deployed primarily against lefties.
Edgin broke camp as one of the two main lefties in the Mets' bullpen, but he posted a 9.64 ERA and 1.82 WHIP in 9.1 innings before he was demoted to Double-A Binghamton. Edgin struggled at Double-A and Triple-A, but was called back up six weeks later. He was excellent after the callup, posting a 0.93 ERA and holding the opposition to a .194 batting average in his final 23 games before he was sidelined for the remainder of the year with a hairline fracture in one of his left ribs. He will likely get a chance to use his low-90s fastball and mid-80s slider as a lefty in the team's bullpen in 2014.
Edgin had an impressive spring and nearly made the squad, but was sent down, where he made 41 appearances for Triple-A Buffalo, earning a second-half callup. The Mets rode Edgin hard in the second half of the season, as he made 34 appearances, where he posted a 4.56 ERA and fanned 30 batters in 25.2 innings. That overuse along with spotty control of his fastball coupled with his struggles against righties, helped contribute to a poor stretch drive. With Tim Byrdak likely out most of the year following shoulder surgery, Edgin, who uses a low-90s fastball and mid-80s slider to retire hitters, may be the main lefty for the Mets this year.
