Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
It's hard to believe if you just look at his career numbers, but Baron was actually a supplemental first-round draft pick back in 2009. He managed to make his major league debut with the Mariners in 2015, but things didn't go quite as well in 2016. Due to the restocking the Mariners did last offseason, Baron was relegated to the depths of Double-A Jackson, and although he slashed .280/.377/.358, he also struck out over 20 percent of the time. The success he did have is also mitigated by the fact that he was older than most of his counterparts. Baron's lack of power and high propensity to strike out will likely keep him in an organizational depth role moving forward, especially now that Carlos Ruiz was added to the fold along with Mike Zunino and Jesus Sucre.
A 2009 supplemental first-round pick out of high school, Baron is a good defensive catcher with limited hitting skills. He made his major league debut in September last year but didn't get a hit in 11 at-bats. In the minors, he showed little power, poor plate discipline and a propensity to strike out. The Mariners re-stocked their catcher corps this offseason by bringing in Chris Iannetta and Steve Clevenger, which will send Baron back to Triple-A. With Mike Zunino also hanging around, Baron moves to fourth on the organizational depth chart, making him irrelevant in almost all formats.
