After two years in the Pittsburgh organization and eight minor league seasons overall, Decker appears to be a Quadruple-A player. He offers some skill, such as an outstanding throwing arm and excellent plate discipline, but the sum isn’t any greater than the parts. Decker batted .266/.370/.362 for Triple-A Indianapolis and hit .214 in 36 plate appearances with the Pirates, which led to the organization declining to tender him a contract in the offseason. A combined 43:47 BB:K last year illustrates his strong batting eye — something that could make him appealing to teams if he is willing to sign a minor league contract. The 26-year-old likely faces his future as a bat of the bench.
Decker was unable to parlay an impressive spring training into a spot on Pittsburgh's roster in 2014, playing almost exclusively at the Triple-A level. The former San Diego property hit .257/.355/.391 in 409 plate appearances for Indianapolis. Given the Pirates' stability at all three outfield positions, Decker's only opportunity to crack the big league lineup might be through injuries to the starters -- even then, he's behind Travis Snider and Andrew Lambo. While the left-handed hitter holds a .267/.395/.446 slash line in seven minor league campaigns and is armed with a gun defensively, he'll need more than a few breaks to reach PNC Park in 2015.
Once a prized prospect in the Padres' farm system, Decker showed little in two major league stints, batting .154/.233/.269 with one homer in 26 at-bats. Consequently, he was designated for assignment and soon moved to the Pirates, where his path to the 25-man roster may in fact be more difficult. Residence at Triple-A Indianapolis likely describes his upcoming season.
After four seasons in the Padres' organization, Decker is showing strong enough growth to keep him on your radar although his impact is unlikely to come this year or even next. He's got a nice mix of both power and speed, although his stocky frame will likely favor the power more in the long run. His plate discipline is strong as seen in his 16.8 percent walk rate in his first season at Double-A, but the strikeout rate (23.7 percent) could prove to be a problem. Still, he managed 19 home runs and 15 stolen bases last year and posted a .373 OBP. Keep him on your radar in long term keeper and dynasty leagues, but again, his presence won't be felt for a few years.
Decker, a 2008 supplemental first-round pick, spent 2010 at High-A Lake Elsinore, where he continued to show good power and plate discipline, especially for someone his age (20). He still strikes out too much and without an inflated BABIP, his batting average tumbled to .262. He'll likely spend 2011 at Double-A San Antonio working on his swing and trying to making more contact. Those in keeper leagues should monitor his progress as he's likely to be part of the team's plans sooner rather later.
The Padres' supplemental No. 1 in the 2008 draft did everything right in his full-season debut, showing preternatural plate discipline and excellent power given his age and the level. His contact rate is the primary concern, as striking out in a quarter of your at-bats in the Midwest League is a bad sign. Assuming he goes to Lake Elsinore, he's in line for a huge year and a big leap up prospect charts.
