Skipworth never came close to fulfilling his first-round pick potential because he's been unable to command the strike zone. He had a career-worst 43.9 percent strikeout rate at Double-A Pensacola in 2015, as a 25-year-old no less. He's at the very edge of the Reds' 40-man roster entering spring training - he might not make it to Opening Day if the Reds find other talent that they want to claim.
Skipworth cranked 11 home runs in 239 at-bats at Triple-A New Orleans in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League despite rarely making contact with the baseball, evidenced by 82 strikeouts in 73 games played with just 12 walks on the year. He did, however, draw a walk in one of his four plate appearances during a brief stint with the big club in April. The former first-round pick needs to do some serious work on his swing back on the farm before getting another look in the majors during his age-24 season, and the Marlins' addition of Jarrod Saltamacchia hurt Skipworth's path to regular playing time in the big leagues. He was outrighted to Triple-A in December, meaning he'll enter 2014 without a 40-man roster spot.
After an awful offensive season as an 18-year-old at rookie ball, Skipworth posted almost identically awful numbers as a 19-year-old at Low-A. His tools still give him plenty of upside, and there's no indication yet that he won't be able to stay behind the plate, but the Marlins need to think about having him repeat a level to let him get at least a taste of success as a pro.
The Marlins' first round pick in 2008 had some major adjustment problems in his first exposure to pro ball, but that's not unheard of for an 18-year-old catcher. Skipworth isn't going to go marching Matt Wieters-style up the Florida depth chart any time soon, but he's got a ton of potential on both offense and defense. Just be prepared to invest a few years in him before you see any kind of fantasy payout on that potential.
