DraftKings MLB: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Chris Archer, TB vs. OAK ($12,200): Archer may not offer the stability of Max Scherzer or Chris Sale, but he looks primed to turn in a high-scoring performance, as he will take his 13 percent swinging-strike rate against Oakland, a team that strikes out at a 25 percent clip when facing right-handed pitchers. It's also worth noting that the A's carry a minus-7.8 RAA against the slider, a pitch Archer throws a whopping 46 percent of the time.

Ivan Nova, PIT vs. MIA ($6,500): The matchup seems like a slam dunk for Nova on paper, as he carries a 49 percent ground-ball rate, and the Marlins hit the ball on the ground more than any other team in the league. The 30-year-old has quietly tallied a 10.3 RAA with his fastball in 2017, while the Marlins are a bottom-five team against the pitch. Nova had to leave his last start against the Orioles due to knee inflammation, but he does not appear to be under any restrictions heading into Sunday's start.

CATCHER

Yan Gomes, CLE vs. CWS ($3,200): Gomes is a nice bat to plug in as salary relief against left-handed pitching due to the .282 ISO he has notched over 39 at-bats. Jose Quintana has had a hard time controlling walks and homers when it comes to righty hitters, as he has registered a 10 percent walk rate and 1.6 HR/9 rate over 52 innings.

FIRST BASE

Adam Lind, WAS vs. TEX ($3,500): It seemed unlikely that Austin Bibens-Dirkx would get another start after allowing three runs and walking three batters in 4.2 innings during his outing against the Rays, but Dillon Gee proved ineffective in his rotation debut, and the Rangers are still trying to patch the hole that was left when A.J. Griffin landed on the disabled list. Lind has made his playing time count this season, slashing .348/.405/.652 against right-handed pitching, and he could be in line for a significant boost in playing time if Ryan Zimmerman needs to miss extended time as the result of a back injury.

SECOND BASE

Starlin Castro, NYY vs. BAL ($4,400): Castro has been hammering same-handed pitching this year, notching a .231 ISO and 34 percent hard contact rate over 182 at-bats. Meanwhile, Kevin Gausman has allowed a .556 slugging percentage to righties over 38.1 innings.

THIRD BASE

Miguel Sano, MIN at SF ($4,800): Sano sports a ridiculous 51 percent hard-contact rate against same-handed pitchers this season, which has contributed to a .416 wOBA over 151 at-bats. Matt Cain has notched a 46 percent ground-ball rate, which could result in liftoff for Sano, who is hitting the ball in the air at his own 46 percent clip.

SHORTSTOP

Zack Cozart, CIN at LAD ($4,400): Cozart appears to have come out of nowhere to become one of the best fastball hitters in the league, logging a 16.5 RAA against the pitch this season. Hyun-Jin Ryu's heater clocks in at minus-11.4 RAA, and he has allowed 1.4HR/9 rate against right-handed hitters.

OUTFIELD

Marwin Gonzalez, HOU vs. LAA ($4,900):Jesse Chavez's fastball has yielded a minus-6.6 RAA over 71 innings this season, while Gonzalez has logged a 14.7 RAA against the pitch. Gonzalez has been dominating right-handed pitching, as evidenced by his .330 ISO and .452 wOBA in 103 at-bats.

Corey Dickerson, TB vs. OAK ($4,800):Jesse Hahn has produced strong surface stats from both sides of the platoon, but a 5.42 xFIP against lefties may indicate that there is trouble around the corner. It's not hard to imagine how bad peripherals might come to life around Dickerson, who has tallied a .304 ISO and 40 percent hard contact rate against righties.

Hunter Renfroe, SD vs. KC ($4,500): Opposing starter Jake Junis has walked more right-handed hitters than he has struck out in his 4.1 innings this season, while surrendering a hard contact rate of 50 percent. Renfroe has performed better against lefties, but he has still managed to notch a .205 ISO against righty pitchers.
